Home >> MCS Receives SHARP Award On Tuesday April 29, Magbee Contractors Supply in Winder, Georgia formally accepted a Certificate and flags from OSHA confirming their acceptance into the SHARP Program. The presentation was made by Ms. Paige Skidmore, a Safety Specialist from Georgia Tech, and was accepted by Robert Magbee, CEO, Mike Howell, VP/Operations, and Lorraine Simpson, Safety Coordinator. The OSHA Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) recognizes small employers who operate an exemplary safety and health management system. Acceptance into SHARP by OSHA is an achievement that identifies Magbee as a model for worksite safety and health. Upon receiving SHARP recognition, their worksite will be exempt from programmed inspections during the period that the SHARP certification is valid. To participate in SHARP, you must request a consultation visit that involves a complete hazard identification survey, involve employees in the consultation process, correct all hazards identified by the consultant, implement and maintain a safety and health management system that, at a minimum, addresses OSHAs 1989 Safety and Health Program Management Guidelines, lower your companys Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred (DART) rate and Total Recordable Case (TRC) rate below the national average, and agree to notify your state Consultation Project Office prior to making any changes in the working conditions or introducing new hazards into the workplace. Information on the SHARP program is available at the official OSHA website. The Magbee team began this process in September of 2006. Becoming a member of SHARP has enhanced our companys safety program by involving employees and reducing incidents, which has strengthened already good relationships between management and our employees, stated Mike Howell, VP of Operations. He explained that important factors in employee involvement include training Magbees workforce on safety and policies and procedures, and increasing their knowledge of OSHA standards, in conjunction with our active Safety Committee. Howell noted that some of the OSHA regulatory aspects that must be met in order to qualify that were audited during the comprehensive On-site Consultation visits included machine guarding, (protecting points of operation and pinch points); lock-out/tag-out (identifying energy sources, designating authorized and affected personnel, and developing proper start-up/shutdown procedures); powered industrial trucks (operating procedures and safe driving criteria, vehicle maintenance checks); walking and working surfaces (upgrading stairs, walkways, and platforms by adding proper railing systems, toe boards, etc.); hearing conservation; and personal protective equipment (PPE) (PPE assessments to identify proper safety equipment for the job performed.) Magbee Contractors Supply is Georgias 14th company to attain SHARP Certification, according to the information posted on the OSHA Website which was last updated 04/24/2008.
